Summer Fete 19th July 2008
On what started out to be a bright, sunny day, we held our Summer Fête recently in a front garden of the road. This is an annual event with the sole aim of raising money for charity – this year we have donated the proceeds to The Scout Movement.
This is a community event and is aimed at bringing people together from the Hazelwood area to meet each other, have a chat and generally relax and enjoy themselves. Many of our residents donate cakes and therefore a cream tea is provided.
For the children we had a magician, Looney Lenny. He was really good interacting well with the children (and some adults). He was twisting balloons, making jokes, doing some ventriloquism with soft cuddly toys and generally keeping a smile on the children’s faces.
Fran, the Social Secretary, did not notice that the magician had arrived and when a gentleman appeared with a round, friendly face, she asked him if he was the magician – ‘No’, was the reply, ‘I am your local M.P. John Hemming’. Penny Wagg, our local Councillor, and her husband, Trevor, also turned up to support us.
The highlight of the day was another community event, one of our residents, George Gallagher, is a member of a band which has a good following namely, ‘Mad Jocks and Englishmen’ who belted out many popular songs with a skiffle flavour which really pleased the audience.
The raffle was held with the first prize being a beautiful oil painting donated by one of our community, Claire Armstrong, a budding artist, of a street scene from Birmingham City Centre. We had many other raffle prizes, in fact too many, which numbered well over 20 donated. The day was only slightly marred by two heavy showers but we had gazebos to shelter under which brought us even closer.
